Just out of jail, crumpled English archaeologist Arthur reconnects with his wayward crew of tombaroli accomplices –a happy-go-lucky collective of itinerant grave-robbers who survive by looting Etruscan tombs and selling the ancient treasures they dig up.
Trivia: Lead actor Josh O'Connor wanted to work with director Alice Rohrwacher, and wrote to her five times over the course of three years. He didn't know her address, so he just wrote 'Italy' on the envelope and hoped for the best. As it turns out, one of his letters eventually reached her.
Phil’s review: Superbly acted - I hadn’t seen Josh O'Connor in a film before and was totally engrossed in his performance of a complex character. I was transfixed throughout the film trying to understand what is going on in his mind, and what motivates him. He seems troubled by both the past and the future and this is directly reflected through his awe for and protectiveness of the antiquities he has an uncanny ability to find. A splendid film set in a time when you could still live simply and well, with seemingly little.
