In the wake of the unexpected death of the beloved Pope, Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself tasked with the fraught responsibility of running the covert and archaic process of the conclave: assembling all the cardinals of the Catholic Church for a papal election.

As the Church's most powerful leaders gather from across the globe and are locked in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a trail of deep secrets left in the deceased Pope's wake ... secrets which could shake the foundations of the Church.

Trivia: Many of the actions Cardinal Lawrence and the rest of the cardinals take during the film's conclave process are accurate to the Catholic faith and centuries of tradition. For example, after a Pope dies, his ring (called the Ring of the Fisherman) is removed and destroyed, to prevent it from being used to forge the Papal seal on documents.

Phil’s review: This film is beautifully shot, with a riveting who-dunnit style plot pitching unconditional love vs skulduggery. Ralph Fiennes at his absolute best.
