One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life.

As a relationship develops between the two men, Adam finds himself preoccupied with memories of the past and is eventually drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up. When he gets there, he discovers that his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living inside his childhood home, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before.

Trivia: Director Andrew Haigh’s real-life childhood home served as the filming location for the house in the centre of Adam’s story.

Phil’s review: So engrossing are the actors’ performances in this film, it was only once the credits rolled, that I realised I’d seen only four characters on screen for the entire film. As for the themes explored, I was left wondering: How well do we actually know our most intimate partners or even our own children or parents?
