An Australian story which follows 10-year-old Annie and Runt, her stray dog, as they attempt to win the Agility Course Championship at the Krumpets Dog Show in London in order to save their family's farm from drought and misery.
Trivia: Runt, the novel on which this film was based, won the Book of the Year and the Children's prize at the 2023 Indie Book Awards. It also won the Children's book award at the 2023 BookPeople Book of the Year Awards and the 2023 CBCA Children's Book of the Year Award: Younger Readers. Runt also won the 2024 Young Australian Best Book Award for Fiction for older readers.
Phil’s review: Self-deprecation, backing the underdog (literally), Outback pubs and farming communities - this film has all the hallmarks of Aussie storytelling gold. A spirited girl learns some life lessons on the big stage - it’s warm-hearted but never cringe, and features beloved Jack Thompson as the meanie who you can’t help quite liking all the same. Bring the family. And some tissues.
